Twisting and pirouetting in the wind arc thousands of frozen crystals, jostled and pushed horizontal by an uncaring gust, winter’s breath. Crisp New England apple scent; then cold sharp impact, ice against skin. Silence of the fall indifferent to the seething humanity below; thumping car stereo bass, bleary eyed commuters screaming into speakerboxes for coffee, squeal and bang of garbage cans slammed into dump trucks. Just above is tranquil chaos; silent, spinning, choreographed chaos.

On July 7th, @empirebetty was involved in a car wreck; she walked away unharmed, but her vehicle was unfortunately totaled. I present to you: In Memory of Fudgie The Whale.

Friend, companion, partner—these are labels generally reserved for close relatives, spouses, best friends. When an object transcends that label and becomes something more to a person, we call that sentimentality. However, it’s disengenious to label Fudgie that way—he was more than just a car with warm fuzzies stapled on; he really was a companion and friend.

Through catastrophic, life changing events he was there—uprooting from the big city, heartbreak, career change; all major milestones on life’s roadway. Through all this he was a constant, there to comfort and console, to whisk away on a day trip and leave burdens behind; even for just a short while. We can rail against the unjustness of having him taken away so abruptly. We can curse karma or fortune, be angry or sad or a mixture of both. Perhaps it’s best to remember and cherish the wonderful times that were had: Sunny beaches, fun in the city, festivals, crusing top down and carefree, a bit of irreverent nose thumbing in the face of life’s stern countenence.

His legacy ended protecting his owner. In the words of the auto body mechanic that looked over the car and tried to save him, “By the condition of the car, I could tell you loved him very much.” That love was returned—he bore the full force of the impact, and saved a very special person from harm.

Let’s take a moment to remember; a quick check that we’re not taking a loved one or something of value in our lives for granted, and share your favorite Fudgie (or maybe your own valued modus of transportation) memory with a friend or family member.

So I pray in earnest for peace, that the tumultuous upheaval of the last few months settle into calm roads, sunny skies, and hope for the future.

We’ll miss you, Mr. Whale!
